Cullen was born in West Orange, New Jersey in 1960, as the youngest of eight children. However, his father died when he was just seven months old, and his mother died in a car crash when he was 17. Cullen had been informed of his mother’s accident by a phone call, but it wasn’t until he arrived at the hospital that he found out she was dead – a traumatic event according to TheCrimes/Onet that “he never forgot, and worse, never forgave.” His childhood had been “miserable”, and he later claimed he made a suicide attempt for the first time aged just nine. After his mother’s death, he attempted suicide again, and was sent to a psychiatric hospital. After he was discharged, he dropped out of school and joined the navy, where he served aboard the USS Woodrow Wilson. In 1984, he was discharged because of medical reasons.Cullen decided to move into the medical profession, and enrolled at Mountainside Hospital’s nursing school in Montclair, New Jersey where he was elected president of his nursing class. After graduating in 1986, he started work in the burns unit of Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
